Former student of the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon (France), Clément Onimus has obtained the diploma of the Agrégation in 2006. He wrote a Master 1 thesis entitled “The mawali in Egypt from the 7th to the 11th century” (2004) which was mainly based on a serial study of the Arabic papyri of Egypt. He then wrote a Master 2 thesis on Damascus in the 15th century (2008). This work takes a historiographical approach, summarizing the available knowledge about the Syrian city under the Circassian mamluks.
Since 2008, he is preparing a PhD on the amirs in the mamluk sultanate under the Sultans Barquq and Faraj (1382-1412). It is a matter of a prosopographical research of the emirs who are mentioned in the contemporary sources, as chronicles, annals and biographical dictionaries. The study of the actors sheds light on the interactions that are involved in the frequent conflicts of that time of crisis, and is a useful heuristical tool to understand the confusing series of events presented in the chronicles of that period.
